What a gem! Elizabeth Mathys, who works as a domestic worker on a farm in the Koo Valley in Montagu in the Western Cape, proudly shows off this gigantic gem squash that was grown in the farm’s vegetable garden.

The sheer size of the squash, which weighs a whopping 2,76kg, becomes apparent when held next to an above-average-sized squash. Farm owner Edwin Netto says he has donated a giant gem squash – this is not the first one he has picked – to a retail store for display purposes. He says he has also tried unsuccessfully to eat about an eighth of one of the massive veggies he harvested. – Staff reporter
