A special focus was placed on environmental awareness at the 2008 Pretoria Show last month, with various recycling stations set up for the duration of the show to sort different types of waste. Visitors were encouraged to sort cans, glass and paper into separate bins for recycling.
More than 8t of animal waste and bedding were removed to be used as compost.
The show was held close to arbor week and more than 450 indigenous trees have also been planted on the show terrain to ensure that water will be used more economically, and many of the halls have been refitted with energy-saving light bulbs.
Apart from the environmental awareness campaign, jobs were created for the local community with many people helping to collect recyclable waste. – Staff reporter
