Johan Kotzé on the growing pressure facing South African farmers

South African farmers are under increasing financial pressure as the sector grapples with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), high input costs, tight margins and the risk of El Niño conditions.

In an interview with Farmer’s Weekly, Agri SA CEO Johan Kotzé discusses the financial strain facing producers, shortcomings in the country’s FMD response and the need for development finance to support farmers who cannot access funding on conventional commercial terms.

He also explains why a coordinated approach to FMD remains critical, and what organised agriculture and government need to do to create conditions in which farmers can remain viable and the sector can continue to grow.
