An app to improve maize and soya bean yield

Although developed in the USA, this inexpensive app can be used locally.

Dr Rikus Kloppers of Pannar suggested that I take a look at an app for maize and soya that he has found useful. The app was developed by Purdue University in Indiana, USA, one of the world’s leading academic centres of agricultural science. The Purdue Extension Corn & Soybean Field Guide has been a much-used resource for more than 20 years, and forms the basis of the app.
Comprehensive and scientific, the app has a range of tools and information to help you effectively manage corn and soya bean production.

The app costs R160 from the Itunes app store, but will be an asset to any farmer. It has received excellent reviews. The maize and soya bean management sections provide information on planting, growth and development, nutrient recommendations and nutrient deficiencies. There is also scouting information as well as management recommendations for insects, diseases, nematodes and vertebrate pests.

Weeds, yield and soil
The weed section assists users in identifying broadleaf, grass and sedge weeds, provides a practical tool for identifying herbicide injury, and describes herbicide modes of action. Built-in calculators can help you estimate yield, and give you a tool to help decide when to replant. The soil and fertility section includes information on soil sampling, soil pH and liming, and other key areas. In addition, the app includes hundreds of useful, high-quality images to help you diagnose problems and understand common issues in maize and soya bean production.

Short videos illustrate important concepts. Finally, there is a tool for submitting samples to the Purdue Plant and Pest Diagnostic Laboratory.
