Big prize for this year’s emerging cattle farmer carcass competition

The Obaro Feedlot and Livestock Improvement Project has secured a sponsorship to reward this year’s carcass competition winner with a stud bull worth over R40 000.

According to project manager Patric Sekwatlakwatla, this year’s overall winner will walk away with a Bonsmara stud bull from Red Gate Bonsmaras.

He said it was very important for emerging cattle farmers to have access to the best animal genes in order to improve their animals.

The competition has already attracted 21 emerging farmers with more than 180 cattle. “Seeing the cattle already entered, it’s obvious the competition will be of a very high standard,” said Sekwatlakwatla.

The competition, which forms part of the annual South African Meat Industry Company Carcass competition, will take place in November, when the animals will be judged on the hoof and hook.

On-the-hoof judging will take place at the Obaro kraals in Brits on November 13, while carcasses will be judged at the Chamdor Abattoir two days later.

“With food security an ever-present and challenging issue, it’s imperative that projects of this nature be encouraged and supported in order to attain a sustainable supply of locally-produced beef in the future,” said Sekwatlakwatla.
