Areas south of Bloemfontein received between 1mm and 25mm while showers of up to 150mm were received in the north-eastern parts of the Free State province.

The worst affected districts were, among others, Smithfield, Rouxville, Dewetsdorp, Zastron and VanStadensrus.

For many farmers in the southern Free State the rain that occurred during the first week of January was the first significant rain they received since the onset of the 2016/2017 summer season.

Some of these parts have endured drought conditions since 2013 and good follow-up rains were needed to break the grip of the drought.

Drought-stricken livestock producers will still have to feed livestock since it would take between three and five years for grazing to recover.

Free State Agriculture (FSA) has asked for help on behalf of farmers affected by the drought, to purchase feed/drought pellets, especially for sheep, and for the transportation of feed.

Anyone who can assist with the donation of funds, feed or transport is requested to contact FSA at 051 444 4609 or [email protected].
