Government’s 50% plan unconstitutional – Grain SA

Grain SA (GSA) called upon its members to remain calm and await the outcome of the elections – and undertook to protect grain farmers’ rights as entrenched in the Constitution, should the ‘50% notion’ be seriously entertained by government.

In its latest newsletter, GSA strongly condemned government’s proposal that commercial farmers should concede 50% of each farm to farm workers.

GSA’s legal advisor, Advocate George Bizos, said such a proposal would be unconstitutional and that the ANC would probably not garner enough support in the next elections to be in a position to change the Constitution.

He further advised that GSA should proceed to assist new black farmers to become established as successful commercial grain farmers and to table proposals to improve the circumstances of farm workers.
