On Thursday (9 January) President Zuma will hand over land to the N’wandlamhlarhi Community Property Association, which is made up of communities who claimed land from Mala Mala Game Reserve in Mpumalanga province.

The claimed land falls within the Bushbuckridge Municipality in the Ehlanzeni District, one of the districts prioritised by the department of rural development due to high levels of poverty.

The Mala Mala claimants (about 960 households) lodged claims against 21 properties consisting of 63 portions, and 65 000ha in total. They have been awarded 13 184ha across five farms, including portions of the game reserve.

“While the total land value appears to be exorbitant, it should be noted that this is prime game land,” said Gugile Nkwinti, minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.
