Lulama Xingwana, minister of agriculture and land affairs, recently opened a huge BEE poultry farming venture at Lourie in the Koega area of the Eastern Cape. “I am glad that Rocklands Poultry and Kamnandi Trading heard the president’s appeal for an aggressive transformation of the economy and quickly entered into a trade agreement, which is so vital for the Eastern Cape economy.

This phenomenal project demonstrates what private-public partnership can achieve when we share the same strategic vision. It is vital that government partners with local industry to promote skills development and economic growth,” she said. “The one BEE charter that still needs to be addressed – namely the one for AgriBEE – could be gazetted by late September or early October 2007.” The R20-million poultry project, the biggest public-private farming venture in the Koega area to date, is financed by Rocklands Poultry which donated R6 million. The Department of Agriculture contributed R5 million, and commercial loans made available R9 million. – Roelof Bezuidenhout
