Born of the frustration of having goods stolen from boxes in transit, a high-security packaging tape has been developed by Cape Town businessperson Ari Shpigel, to deter offenders from pilfering from boxes and then concealing the act. “I had to stop thieves being able to cover the openings in boxes with other tape to hide the fact that the original tape had been tampered with,” says Ari. “came up with a unique tape, impossible to replicate and which isn’t kept in stock and thus can’t be stolen for unlawful use.

It adds an element of security available only on demand.” Beating thieves T he SecuriTape System is designed and patented to enhance security. inserts a secondary tape or security seal, under the main adhesive tape when the cartons are sealed. he user sets a printing wheel that prints unique information onto the security seal underneath specially designed tape with a clear centre or window. The information is changed by changing the printing wheel.

If the carton is tampered with the security seal breaks. dispenser with the printing wheel also perforates the tape as it’s stuck on and the perforations prevent the tape from being lifted off the carton in one piece, as it tears in a messy, haphazard way. “The result is amazing,” says Ari. “A unique security seal laminated onto the main adhesive tape. Tampering is evident from the breaking up of the perforated tape.” t transforms even the most basic, clear packaging tape into a high security, tamper-evident sealing tape. he SecuriTape Sytem comes in three dispensing models, a hand-held model, a table top model and an attachment for case-sealing machines.

The attachment can be fitted to most existing automatic and semi-automatic sealing machinery and the whole system is suitable for tapes from 48mm to 75mm wide. All the consumables, including the primary sealing tape, blank SecuriSeal, printing wheels and the ink refills are supplied by Skeitex (Cape) CC. Getting the product to the market While Ari initially focused on marketing the product in cities and industrial and commercial areas, he’s now extending his reach to other areas. “The system can and should be used on any product packaged in cardboard boxes such as wine, dairy produce, dried fruit and biltong,” explains Ari.

“It can be applied with the mobile dispenser or an automatic carton-sealing device.” ri wanted a user-friendly tape with a variety of security options at an affordable price. It’s made in South Africa from environmentally friendly material and is fully supported in terms of warranty, maintenance and after-sales service. “We are proud of the fact that the product not only offers high security value, but it’s one of the most competitive and economical on the market to date,” says he SecuriTape System won a SA Bureau of Standards Disa Award for design excellence in 2007.

The judges called it an “outstanding dispenser, well-designed with good functionality and unique features”. The SecuriTape dispenser costs R1 200, including the printing information wheel. at 72mm x 100m costs R26/roll, excluding the cost of the security seal at R4,76 per roll. – Robyn Joubert Contact Auriel Mitchley on (011) 889 0796 or e-mail [email protected]. |fw
