There’s an enjoyable challenge for author Gail Schimmel, CEO of the Advertising Regulatory Board, in combining the hurly-burly of her working days with some personal time to write fiction often combining both a thriller thread and an element of quiet social satire.
Schimmel’s job might be key to why The Finish Line (Macmillan, R340) is ‘only’ her ninth adult novel since 2008, apart from an earlier children’s book and 2022’s great romp Chasing Marian, written with three other local fiction heroes.
Less rush means we readers benefit from her beautifully polished and elegantly concise prose – a real cause for celebration.
