Karan Beef has resumed beef exports after more than a year of disruptions caused by foot-and-mouth disease, with its first container now en route to Jordan.

The shipment marks a significant milestone for South Africa’s beef industry, which has faced severe market access challenges since renewed foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks resulted in export restrictions across several key destinations.

In a video announcement from the company’s facility in Balfour, Mpumalanga, Karan Beef Director Matthew Karan described the shipment as an important step forward for both the company and the broader red meat industry.

In a further statement, the company said this achievement would not have been possible without the national FMD vaccination programme led by Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen and his department.

“Without effective vaccination, export markets will not accept South African beef. Vaccination is the foundation of animal health, market access, and the long-term sustainability of our industry,” the company said.

Expectations of more markets reopening

Prior to the FMD-related restrictions, Karan Beef exported to more than 14 markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

The company said it remains optimistic that ongoing bilateral negotiations between South Africa and its trading partners will result in the reopening of additional markets in the coming months.

The return to export markets comes after a turbulent period for the South African beef industry. The country’s beef exports reached 38 657t in 2024, up 30% year-on-year and the highest level recorded in several years.

However, renewed FMD outbreaks during 2025 led to fresh restrictions and significant disruptions to trade.

According to Karan Beef, international buyers have responded positively to the company’s resumption of exports, with existing and prospective customers expressing strong interest in future supply volumes.

In addition, while it acknowledged that production remains under some pressure following vaccine shortages experienced earlier this year, the company said the situation improved significantly as vaccine availability stabilised.

As producers continue to rebuild herd numbers and restore production capacity, Karan Beef expects to be in a stronger position from around August or September to meet growing demand and capitalise on additional export opportunities as more markets reopen.

Industry embraces progress

Industry leaders have welcomed the development. Angus Williamson, chairperson of the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation in KwaZulu-Natal, described the shipment as “a big step in the right direction” for expanding South Africa’s export footprint.

He added that while the benefits will not be immediate, the reopening of export channels should have a positive effect on the industry over time.

“We still have a long journey ahead regarding FMD, but this is a huge step in the right direction,” Williamson noted.

Recovery and renewed opportunity

According to Karan Beef, the shipment represents more than a single container of beef leaving its facility.

“It is a sign of recovery, resilience, and renewed opportunity for South African beef,” the company said.

It added that maintaining animal health through vaccination remains critical for protecting jobs, supporting economic growth, and safeguarding South Africa’s reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality beef.

The company said it will continue working with government, producers, industry organisations, and international customers to rebuild market confidence, expand market access, and secure a sustainable future for South African beef exports.
