Free State Agriculture not fighting minimum wage

Free State Agriculture (FSA) is not opposed to paying a minimum wage of R150/day to farm workers, but is lobbying government for an enabling environment where famers can afford to pay a worker R5 000/month.

Speaking at the Fertiliser Association of Southern Africa’s annual congress in Johannesburg recently, Dr Jack Armour, FSA’s operations manager, said government should create an environment conducive to entrepreneurship, enterprise development, and ‘safety-nets’.

Armour, involved with land reform, municipality liaison and infrastructure within Agri SA structures since 2008, urged the government to adopt the 12 key outcomes reached at the January 2010 Cabinet Lekgotla, instead of forcing the minimum wage higher.

He challenged government to protect and enhance “our environmental assets” and natural resources, and also to develop the entire agricultural value chain.

“The government should push for vibrant, equitable, sustainable rural communities contributing towards food security for all,” said Armour.
