Agriculture presented an opportunity for business expansion in Africa as a whole David Hodnett, of the Barclays Africa Group, said at the recent Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Fresh Connections conference.

“In our view there is more opportunity for commercial operators who will benefit as they understand global food chains,” said Hodnett.

Africa is in a unique position geographically to supply a growing demand for food as the world population rises by a billion in the next 30 years, he said.

Meanwhile, US-based Richard Owen, PMA’s vice-president of global business development said the PMA provided an excellent networking platform for the produce sector.

Tommie van Zyl, PMA South Africa chairperson, said that PMA sees itself as a means of providing contacts, indicating trends and encouraging young people to enter the agriculture industry.

“PMA helps our business grow,” Van Zyl said.
