As a result, dialogue between government and the agriculture sector had to continue.
Van der Merwe also said that if insecurity about land rights could be removed, young farmers will have more confidence in investing in farms.
The only way for agriculture to survive is for it to grow bigger, but policies have to be structured to make sure that the markets in Africa can be targeted for growth, he said.
“There are many factors that have to be taken into consideration when looking for solutions – education and training, implementing of policies, stability in the macro and micro economies will all play a role. SA has the most productive agricultural sector on the continent. Effective, sustainable, food sources is a necessity,” said Van der Merwe.
