KZN SAPS arrests nine suspects for poaching

After pulling over and inspecting a suspicious-looking vehicle recently, two SAPS officers patrolling the KwaMagwaza area of KwaZulu-Natal were surprised to discover that it contained nine people, four antelope carcasses, an axe, two shotguns, ten live shotgun rounds and a pistol with a magazine with two live rounds.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Captain Thulani Zwane, all of the suspects, aged 16 to 56 years old, were immediately arrested and charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and for poaching. “They appeared in the Melmoth Magistrates’ Court on 22 February,” said Zwane. “Seven suspects were remanded in custody, while the two juveniles were released into their parents’ custody.” The suspects will all appear in Court again on 6 March 2013.
