According to Thinus Steenkamp, general manager of the Free State Umbrella Fire Protection Association, the fire spread quickly as a result of strong winds and dry conditions.
It was eventually contained at 10am on Sunday morning (28 September) with some help from a light downpour of rain.
Steenkamp told Farmer’s Weekly the extent of damages is unknown at this point.
“We are unaware of other damages or loss of livestock, except for Kobus and Marie Kriek, who reported their outbuilding on fire, 5m from their home. Fortunately warden section fire fighters helped prevent the flames from spreading.”
Steenkamp advised landowners and farmers to take the necessary precautions when burning.
“The grass is still dry. And if we have three more days of sun, runaway fires will be imminent. Farmers should notify the local Fire Protection Association when they intend burning.”
