The tractor will leave Cape Town on 1 August and arrive in Entabeni, Limpopo on 4 September. Each kilometre will be sold at R100 and all proceeds will go towards the orphanage.

Vlam Barnard, area manager for New Holland, explained that much focus was placed on anti-poaching efforts but little thought was given to the baby rhinos that stayed behind when their mothers were poached. “We wanted to make a contribution to saving rhinos and the orphanage is our chosen project.”

Barnard and Ferdinand Rabie, Big Brother celebrity and farmer, plan to raise even more funds by cycling ahead of the tractor. “We will leave an hour before the tractor and will stop once the tractor has caught up to us. The kilometres we travel will also be sold.”

Asked whether the team realised that they might have to cycle the full 3 000km, Barnard said: “Yes, we expect to be a lot lighter when we get to our destination!”
