Organised agriculture has many questions for new police commissioner

South Africa’s farmers’ unions are keen to meet the new National Police Commissioner, Mangwashi Phiyegi, to find out her plans on dealing with rural safety and security concerns.

While the unions would have preferred a NPC who had risen through police ranks and therefore had a good understanding of SA’s crime problems, they respected Phiyegi’s extensive managerial experience in the civilian sector. Concerns raised by the farmers’ unions included farm murders, stock theft and the lack of commandoes.
