Problems and solutions for difficult times

Commodity organisations are a “great strength” in the agriculture sector and need to drive “constructive change and effective disaster management”, said Bishop Paradise Mahlangu of the National Emerging Red Meat Producers Organisation (Nerpo) at the Agri-SA commodity conference.

He went on to say it was critical that Agri-Parks should be commodity-driven.

“There is a gap here that will cause a serious problem, if the implementation of the Agri-Parks is to be left in the hands of lower [state] management,” said Mahlangu.

The frequency of ‘drought events’ called for the implementation of robust systems able to respond to disasters in the short-, medium- and long-term, said Mahlangu.

Furthermore, a disaster must be declared early enough so that “the relief comes before it’s too late.”
