Rising poultry farmer named New Harvest of the Year

Gilbert Phalafala started farming six years ago and was recently named the winner of the 2012 Toyota South Africa New Harvest competition for emerging farmers.

Phalafala received a Toyota Hilux Xtra Cab as a prize. Phalafala farms in North West near Zeerust. He has grown his small family chicken broiling business into being a supplier to Rainbow Chicken. The New Harvest competition identifies and evaluates the most promising emerging farmers in South Africa.

“Gilbert is a perfect example of the type of farmer that we want to recognise with the New Harvest competition. He has shown all the characteristics that are required to make him a top commercial farmer,” said Kerry Roodt, General Manager for Marketing Communications at Toyota South Africa Motors.

“Gilbert has managed the farm on sound business principles and has shown constant improvements in efficiency and profitability. The level of training and morale amongst his personnel are also noteworthy and it clearly shows in his productivity levels,” said Prof Carlu van der Westhuizen, the convenor of the panel of judges.
