SA agribusiness exports to Africa increasing

Purchasing power and demand in Africa for agricultural products is growing fast and a clear indication of this is the growth in trade between African countries.

According to Nils Flaatten, CEO of the Western Cape Destination Marketing, Investment and Trade Promotion Agency (Wesgro), total monetary value of trade between African countries amounted to almost R49 billion in 2011. Flaatten was speaking at the recent Africa Agribusiness Forum in Somerset West and provided some updated information on imports and exports of agribusiness products between African countries, with specific focus on the growth of imports and exports into and from South Africa. “South Africa topped the list of ten largest African exporters of agribusiness products into Africa during 2011, with a 27% share of all exports, followed by Kenya with 14% and Egypt with 12%,” said Flaatten.
