WC Farmers not happy with predation management protocol

Western Cape livestock farmers and provincial authorities are getting closer to finalising an agreement on the management of damage causing animals, particularly black-backed jackal, caracal and bushpig.

But farmers are still concerned that the provisions in the provincial protocol are much stricter than the rules that apply in other provinces. According to the provincial chairperson of the Predation Management Forum which represented the industry in the consultations with CapeNature, Thys Delport, farmers were concerned that the draft protocol still stipulated that farmers needed permits from CapeNature to use certain predation management methods on their own farms.
