When spaghetti grew on trees

On April 1, 1957, the BBC aired a story about the ‘spaghetti tree’ on its current affairs programme Panorama.

Footage showed people on a farm in Switzerland merrily pulling strands of spaghetti from trees and placing it in baskets before laying it out to dry in the sun. The narrator, respected newsman Richard Dimleby, said that the family would have a good year ahead due to a booming spaghetti harvest free from ‘the spaghetti weevil’.

At the end, the people sat down to enjoy a meal of freshly picked spaghetti.

Find this story bizarre? Well, back in the day, Brits had vaguely heard about spaghetti so it was easier to believe especially coming from a well-known news broadcaster.
