The arrival of the Kove 800X Pro from China has certainly turned a few heads among adventure riders.
It’s a bike that challenges the established names with an appealing mix of performance, low weight, and competitive pricing. But beyond the spec sheets and launch-day excitement, what’s it actually like to live with?
Farmer’s Weekly was fortunate enough to get our hands on one, thanks to Conrad Koen from Off Road Cycles in Pretoria, who kindly made a demo bike available for a weekend test – a particularly wet weekend, we should add.
First impressions
We liked what we saw. The bike has strong, athletic lines and comes in an ‘outdoorsy’ matte dark green that looks right at home in the veld. It gives the impression of a machine built for dirt roads and the kind of adventure that takes you well beyond the farm gate.
Fire it up, and the look is backed up by sound. There’s a deep, throaty growl that becomes more pronounced under acceleration and even more so when dropping down a gear. Power is plentiful – arguably more than you expect – and it demands your attention.
Learning to tame the bike
At lower speeds, especially in ‘Sport’ mode, the throttle can feel a bit abrupt. It’s not unmanageable, but it does remind you to stay sharp.
With more time in the saddle, though, we suspect most riders would quickly learn to tame it.
Where the Kove really comes into its own is on gravel. This is a bike that almost invites you to stand up and take it off-road.
In that position, it’s surprisingly comfortable, with wide foot pegs and a handlebar height that suits a rider of average build. The narrow seat and tank make it easy to grip the bike with your knees, giving you good control on loose surfaces – exactly what you want when covering farm tracks or venturing further afield.
Minor chinks
Not everything is perfect, though. One small irritation we kept coming back to was the indicator switch. It’s awkward to reach, mainly because of the position and size of the horn button just below it.
In town riding, it became a bit of a nuisance, as you have to shift your hand slightly off the grip to operate it – and then do it all over again to cancel the indicator. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it does take some getting used to.
Durability is always a question with newer brands, but here the feedback was reassuring. Off Road Cycles told us that this particular demo bike has been in use for over a year and, in their words, “everyone who rode it tried to break it”.
Despite that, there are no visible signs of excessive wear, and the bike’s handling remains unaffected.
From a farming perspective, the Kove makes a strong case for itself. It’s light, agile and handles more like a smaller bike, making it well suited to everyday farm use. At the same time, it has more than enough power when you need it.
And if there’s a quick trip into town on the cards, it’s comfortable enough for longer stretches – though perhaps not quite the ideal choice for a marathon ride from Bothaville to Cape Town, especially if you’re on the wrong side of 45.
Nevertheless, the Kove 800X Pro impresses where it matters most.
It delivers on performance and handling, while still carrying the understandable question marks that come with a relatively new name in the market. For now, though, it’s a bike that’s hard to ignore – on the farm or off it.
Given limited time with the Kove 800X Pro, we also considered feedback from other test riders, owners and online riding communities. The general consensus is clear: this is a capable, well-balanced machine that punches above its weight.
A punchy performer
One of the most consistent themes in rider feedback is the engine’s strong performance. Riders describe the bike as lively and responsive, with more than enough power for both open-road cruising and spirited riding. Several reports highlight how quickly the bike builds speed, with comfortable cruising well above highway limits when required.
This performance, combined with a relatively light overall package, gives the Kove a distinctly energetic feel – something that sets it apart in the midweight adventure category.
Built for gravel and beyond
Where the 800X Pro really appears to shine is off-road. Riders frequently describe it as confidence-inspiring on gravel, with a stable chassis and capable suspension that soaks up rough terrain effectively.
Many note that it feels noticeably lighter and more manageable than some of its more established competitors.
This translates into easier handling on loose surfaces, making it particularly appealing for riders who spend significant time on farm roads, district routes and remote tracks.
For South African conditions, where tar often gives way to gravel without warning, this kind of versatility is a major advantage.
Value that turns heads
Another standout feature is the bike’s value proposition. Riders repeatedly point out that the level of specification and performance rivals that of significantly more expensive machines.
In a segment where pricing can quickly escalate, the Kove positions itself as an accessible alternative without obvious compromises in core capability. For farmers and rural riders looking for a dual-purpose machine that can serve both work and leisure, this is a compelling argument.
Not without its quirks
Despite the strong positives, rider feedback also highlights a number of areas that still need refinement.
The most frequently mentioned issue is throttle response at low speeds. Some riders report a slightly abrupt or ‘jerky’ feel when riding slowly, particularly in technical off-road conditions.
While not a deal-breaker, it does affect rideability in situations where smooth control is essential. There are also scattered reports of minor quality concerns, such as small electrical niggles, battery-related issues, and fasteners showing early signs of wear.
These appear to be typical early-production teething problems, rather than systemic failures, but they are worth noting.
Long-term reliability?
Perhaps the most significant unknown is long-term durability. As a relatively new entrant to the global market, Kove does not yet have the decades-long track record of more established manufacturers.

Riders are understandably cautious, particularly when it comes to engine longevity, parts availability, and dealer support – factors that are especially critical in rural and agricultural environments where back-up is not always close at hand.
For many potential buyers, this will be the clincher: not how the bike performs on day one, but how it holds up over years of hard use.
A strong challenger with real potential
The early verdict from riders is clear: the Kove 800X Pro is a highly capable and exciting addition to the adventure bike segment. It delivers impressive performance, genuine off-road ability and standout value.
At the same time, it enters a competitive market with questions still to answer around refinement, support and long-term reliability.
For now, it represents something both refreshing and slightly disruptive. The machine may not yet have the legacy of its rivals, but is already earning respect where it matters most – out on the road, and far beyond it.
