Agriculture not to blame for poverty

“Unemployment and poverty in South Africa is a reality,” said TAU SA president Ben Marais at the organisation’s recent annual congress. “But agriculture doesn’t have the capacity to accept responsibility for this.”

Establishing people on small tracts of land where sustainable production isn’t feasible, isn’t fair or right, he continued – that creates more poverty. “Instead, the land could be used for the commercial production of food and the creation of job opportunities, thus contributing to the wellbeing of the area in question,” he said.

“That commercial farmers are functioning in rural areas contributes to the fact that rural life in its entirety is sustained. Businesses owe their existence to the incomes generated by farmers and their employees. The contribution made by small and subsistence farmers to job creation and cash flow for businesses is marginal compared to commercial farmers.”
