Europe’s second-largest fashion retailer, Swedish-based Hennes and Mauritz, blacklisted the A$3 billion Australian wool industry over the practice of mulesing.
The retailer acted after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) claimed the Australian wool industry had reneged on a promise to end mulesing by 2010. Australian sheep industry officials vehemently deny any decision to halt the search for compassionate mulesing alternatives. Veterinarians claim the practice is in the interests of the welfare of the sheep. – Alan Harman
