Now in its third year of local production, the tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB), made by Bell Equipment at its Richard’s Bay manufacturing facility, has captured a major share of the South African market, and the latest J-series model should strengthen this position. Joe Spencer reports.

According to Ashley Bell, TLB product marketing manager for Bell Equipment, the company is looking out for increased Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLB) sales, particularly in the agricultural sector. “TLB sales in farming operations in southern Africa are climbing, as farmers realise the versatility of this type of machine,” says Ashley. “They’ve doubled since 2005 and we anticipate further growth.”

The Bell G-Series TLB, with its high levels of performance, durability and operator friendliness has proved to be a strong, reliable workhorse. Bell now claims their all-new Bell J-Series TLB will offer even greater value, with added enhancements to ensure the 315SJ retains Bell’s position at the forefront of the South African market.

New powertrain components, together with structural and electrical upgrades, are just some of the improvements on the new series, adding value to original features such as high-bucket breakout forces, powerful hydraulics and the exceptional lugging power of the John Deere engine.

The new powershift transmission provides fast, smooth and clutch-free gearshifts. A multiplate clutch allows for on-the-fly engagement of the Mechanical Front Wheel Drive (MFWD) and this, coupled with a standard limited slip differential, gives excellent traction. The electrical system is also moving with the times and now features on-board diagnostic capabilities and solid-state electronics, reducing the number of relays and improving reliability.

Recognising the growing threat of vehicle theft, Bell is currently investigating incorporating an optional anti-theft system into the on-board electronics. Changes to the cooling system are aimed at reducing service time, and replacing the stacked radiators with a single radiator system has reduced fan speed, noise and fuel consumption. The bonnet is now manufactured from a high-strength composite material, and opens wider for easier engine access. Contact Bell Equipment on 0860 222 355 or e-mail [email protected].
