The Brahman celebrated its 50th year in SA at Maselspoort near Bloemfontein on 30 March where the book Brahman, the Intelligent Choice: 50 years in South Africa was launched. The book is a compilation of the breed’s history and profiles its current breeders. It was edited by Alf Coetzer of Hoopstad, assisted by Llewellyn Labuschagne, the president of the society, and Theo Dicke. Charmaine Alberts Design & Marketing was responsible for the book’s design and coordination. D uring the event a “Sale of Legends” was held where 30 breeders donated semen of 49 bulls, totalling 560 straws. The average price paid per straw was R590, achieving a total turnover of R338 750. Sydney Hunt bought the highest-priced semen (R2 400 per straw) of the bull HBS 75/131 Hunt’s Sugarland 131, donated by Tobie van den Heever. – Wayne Southwood
