Dairy gives back to the community

Learners at selected schools around the country were treated to free dairy products on 12 October as part of the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) School Milk Day.

Launched in 2004, the event aims to promote the image of dairy farmers and encourage milk consumption. “It’s a fixture we’re very proud of,” said MPO KZN regional coordinator Debbie Thomson, who, incidentally, is the daughter of award-winning Mid-Illovo beef farmer Hylton Hackland. The agriculture department, SA Studbook and Mbisi were involved in the initiative, and activity booklets and posters promoting the benefits of dairy products were also handed out.

In KZN, Fairfield Dairy supplied milk, maas and yoghurt to Hawkstone Primary School, which is on the dairy and timber farm of Bruce and Walter MacKenzie, Triandra Farm School on Peter Goble’s farm, and Gartmore School on Charlie MacGillivray’s farm – schools that underscore the often-ignored social contribution farmers make to their communities. Mzamo Primary School in the Platrand farming community, in Mpumalanga, received flavoured drinking yoghurt from Dewfresh Dairy based in Leandra.
