Flame weeding is a non-chemical, environmentally safe way to kill unwanted plants and weeds. The Rothenberger Eco Gardener flame weeder burns a mixture of 35% liquid propane and 63% butane gas in a controllable high-temperature low-velocity flame, applying only sufficient heat to scorch, wilt and kill green plants by stopping photosynthesis. Used when weeds are still small requires less heat and so less gas. Perennial weeds with reserves stored underground in roots, corms or bulbs may require follow-up treatments over several weeks.

The Eco Gardener is designed as an economic and safe weed-problem solution from spot weeding to weeding along fences, paving and edges and even entire fields, although the latter would take time. It uses no chemicals and there is no dangerous residue and so no need to exclude children, pets or livestock from recently treated areas. This makes it ideal for organic production systems.

The Eco Gardener can also be used for melting snow and ice on steps or pathways and less heat without salt simply dries the steps to prevent water from re-freezing. It’s also ideal for thawing frozen pipes. The flame would need to be considerably hotter to ignite wood or polyethylene, but applied over a longer period it’s ideal for lighting a braai. The Eco Gardener has an integrated push-button piezoelectric igniter with full instructions and a disposable Rothenberger Multigas 300 canister. The price is around R360 from Builders Warehouse which also stocks a wide range of other Rothenberger products.
