My late father was a subscriber to Farmer’s Weekly, and as a young child, I became a member of Aunt Betty’s Corner, a children’s page in the magazine (I still have my membership certificate tucked away somewhere!).

In this section there was also a penpal column to which I submitted a letter. Somehow, this appeared in an American journal, and as a result, I received a letter from an American girl, Laura. An amazing friendship followed, and this year we celebrate 50 years of correspondence!  Thank you Farmer’s Weekly for giving me the opportunity to develop an awesome friendship that has spanned half a century!
