The dangers of working with heavy farm machinery were once again spotlighted by the tragic death of a tractor driver at the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Environmental Affairs’ (DAEA) Cedara Agricultural Research Farm. His tractor overturned and crushed him to death. According to shocked sources at the KZN DAEA, 42-year-old Ambrose Buthelezi was driving a tractor-trailer combination being used in water hydrant repairs. As he reversed down a steep incline the vehicle lost traction, flipped over and landed on him. “Paramedics responded immediately but were unable to save Ambrose’s life,” explained departmental spokesperson Mbulelo Baloyi. “The police have opened an inquest docket, although this tragedy is considered a freak accident.” MEC Mtholephi Mthimkhulu conveyed the department’s condolences to Buthelezi’s family and friends. – Lloyd Phillips
