BonHaven Beef Cattle of Tarkastad, Eastern Cape has partnered with Herefords & Red Angus of North Dakota in the US. This intensive embryo programme will involve bringing some of the best genetics to South Africa, said PJ Budler of BonHaven Beef Cattle.

While in the US in January, Budler visited the Topp’s operation in North Dakota. “I had seen their bulls in Denver at the National Western Stock Show and after realising that both our programmes shared similar visions we decided to embark on this venture,” he enthused on his return. “Topp’s cowherd is unlike any Hereford herd I’ve seen before. The females are powerful, high volume cows with great udders and teat size. They put a lot of performance into a 550kg to 600kg package. I believe that these genetics are packed with what South Africa needs.”

The first 70 embryos will be implanted in November. The calves will then be owned on a share basis with Herefords & Angus. heifers will be sold at a year old on the annual “Best of Both” Bull Sale in Tarkastad. bulls will be sold as two-year-olds on the same sale. first offering of these embryo calves will be in 2009. Ryan Topp (Herefords & Red Angus) has similar partnerships currently under way in Argentina and Australia. he Herefords Volume VII Bull Sale was held on 5 February 2007 in Bismarck, North Dakota. BonHaven Beef Cattle and NJW Herefords of Sheridan, Wyoming selected TH 14M 63N Tundra 1S as their choice for $9 000. – Randall Stevens • Contact PJ Budler at (045) 847-0204 or (083) 519-2445, e-mail pjbudler@ telkomsa.net, visit www.bonhaven.co.za.
