Land transfer is underway Unlocking agricultural potential A

South Africa’s land reform programme is entering a potentially significant new phase, with government beginning to transfer land acquired through its Proactive Land Acquisition Strategy to beneficiaries with title deeds.

In this episode of AgriView with Wandile, Wandile Sihlobo explores how the release of approximately 2.5 million hectares could unlock new opportunities for agricultural growth, commercial farming and job creation, particularly for young people and women.

He examines why effective beneficiary selection, skills development, industry partnerships and access to affordable finance will be critical to turning land reform into a productive economic opportunity.

Wandile also considers the challenges that could slow progress, from port inefficiencies and rural crime to rising input costs and climate risks. He makes the case for stronger collaboration between government, commodity organisations and farmer representatives, alongside renewed focus on the Agriculture and Agro-processing Master Plan and blended finance solutions.

The central question is how South Africa can translate land transfers into sustainable agricultural growth while strengthening property rights and expanding the sector’s contribution to the economy.
