Inspectors arrived at the scene of the accident and found thousands of dead birds and several thousand severely injured birds, according to a statement released by the NSPCA.

It is alleged that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle which was transporting approximately 13 600 chickens. The severely injured chickens were transported to an abattoir and slaughtered.

“Inspectors worked through the night into the early hours of Tuesday morning, emergency slaughtering about 3 476 severely injured birds to end their suffering,” said Andries Venter, manager of the NSPCA’s Farm Animal Protection Unit.

The chickens were transported by Unitrans who were contracted by Rainbow Chickens to take the birds to Rainbow’s abattoir in Rustenburg, said Venter.
