AVBOB Chairperson Jannie Venter says that in the previous two financial years, the group allocated a total of R28,1 billion to members through its 65Alive Cash Benefit. The December 2025 special bonus marks the organisation’s seventh such declaration and applies to qualifying members’ policies effective from 1 December 2025.
As the name ‘65Alive’ suggests, qualifying members are those aged 65 years and older with a policy that has been in force for at least 10 years. Such members can now claim their 65Alive Cash Benefit on the AVBOB self-service portal.
“More than R276 million has been paid to members through the 65Alive Cash Benefit,” notes Venter.
As a mutual society, AVBOB operates without external shareholders. AVBOB policyholders share in its profits, which are distributed in addition to the standard policy benefits. It is this mutual model that allows AVBOB to put members first by reinvesting profits into benefits that enhance their insurance, funeral, and investment products.
Venter describes the historic bonus declaration as a demonstration of staying true to the founding principles of the business’s shared value model.
AVBOB investment plans
The December 2025 special bonus extends beyond funeral and life insurance, as it also encompasses AVBOB’s five- and 10-year investment plans. These plans become payable upon policy maturity or earlier death. An investment plan policy matures when the full term has been completed and all required premiums have been paid.
Member rewards and free funeral benefits
Membership in a mutual society provides valuable benefits through long-term membership offerings. Apart from the 65Alive Cash Benefit, AVBOB members can also benefit from Member Rewards and from free funeral benefits* valued at up to R23 500. (*Ts & Cs apply. Free funeral benefits only apply if AVBOB Funeral Service conducts the funeral).
The Member Rewards programme presents a renewed opportunity for AVBOB policyholders to receive value for their loyalty to the organisation through a carefully selected network of benefit partners and a variety of rewards to meet their daily needs.
Claiming your cash benefit
All existing policyholders receive an annual communication letter via post, SMS, or email, outlining their policy benefits and any applicable bonuses and/or 65Alive Cash Benefit. Therefore, it is crucial that AVBOB has up-to-date contact details for its members.
