Bakkies Botha, a name synonymous with grit and perseverance on the rugby field, has found a new arena where his drive and dedication continue to flourish – the world of farming.

But for Botha, farming is more than just a game or a career; it’s a calling, deeply connected to his love for South Africa and his commitment to the agricultural community.

“Throughout my rugby career, I had the privilege of travelling the world and seeing different cultures, but I always wanted to return to South Africa,” he says.

“And the reason is simple: it’s the people. There’s something special about the heart of this country and the people who make it what it is.”

From the rugby field to the farm

After a spectacular career as one of South Africa’s most respected rugby players, Botha transitioned to the world of agriculture, embracing the challenges of farming. While farming may seem like a departure from rugby, he quickly discovered that the two worlds have a lot in common: hard work, resilience and a deep respect for tradition.

“Farming is not for the faint-hearted,” says Botha. “It comes with its fair share of challenges, from droughts and disease to unpredictable market prices. But the rewards far outweigh the obstacles. Every day brings a new lesson, a new challenge and the chance to improve. That’s the beauty of it.”

Partnering with Agrico for success

Today, Botha is involved in a variety of farming operations, including the Beefmaster stud farms (B4 and V8) in the Kalahari, as well as the feedlot and livestock industry through André Kock & Seun Limpopo, near Bela-Bela. He is also cultivating maize and peanuts under irrigation to support his feedlot operations.

And for all his farming ventures, Botha relies on the quality and reliability of Agrico’s products.

“When the time came to invest in irrigation systems, we knew we needed a partner who understood our needs and could deliver quality solutions. We turned to Agrico, and that’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made,” says Botha.

On André Kock & Seun’s farm, ten Agrico G3 pivots are now in place, irrigating crops efficiently and effectively. Botha is confident in the reliability of Agrico’s irrigation solutions.

“We did our research, ran the numbers, and spoke to the Agrico team in Nylstroom. The fact that these pivots are locally manufactured is a big plus for us. We know that if any issues arise, the support is fast and parts are readily available. That means less downtime and better efficiency,” he adds.

Stay focused, keep dreaming and never lose faith

For Botha, farming is a continual learning process, much like rugby. He draws direct parallels between the discipline and teamwork required on the rugby field and the dedication and strategy needed to succeed in agriculture.

“Farming is very much like rugby. There are good days and bad days, but you have to keep pushing forward. You must stay focused, keep dreaming and never lose faith. It teaches you to be humble and to always keep your feet on the ground,” he reflects.

“Almost everything I learned on the rugby field – the importance of teamwork, planning and respect for others – applies to farming. Whether you’re on the field or in the field, you need a solid plan and the ability to adapt and adjust. The fundamentals are the same.”
