Dr Theuns Eloff, chairperson of Astral, said the business will remain in good hands while Schutte recovers.

Schutte fell ill during the latter part of a trip to France. He was part of a South African industry and government delegation who met with its US counterparts to negotiate a deal around US poultry imports and the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) renewal.
