Breaking new ground with genomics

Genetic markers could be used in livestock farming to trace chromosome segments over generations, said molecular geneticist Dr Andre Eggen at the annual SA Stud Book International Breeding Symposium held in Bloemfontein recently

“Genomics can be used to identify the population structure of livestock. If enough markers are identified, the structure can be repeated over generations. Genomic selection is not an exact science but it is a powerful new tool to predict results.”

Eggen added that genomics is not a magic tool, and could not be used without proper management.

Also speaking at the conference, Uffe Lauritsen, president of the International Committee for Animal Recording, said there was widespread interest in data collected through animal recording.

“Data is power, precise data is strong power, “said Lauritsen.
