Farmers short-changed by plastic piping companies

The Competition Tribunal has issued administrative penalties totalling tens of millions of Rands to a number of plastic piping companies for participating in anti-competitive practices.

South Africa’s farmers have been some of the unwitting victims of price-fixing and other market controls by 7 companies manufacturing and selling Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) piping in the country. The Southern African Plastic Pipe Manufacturers’ Association said that it was pleased that this unsavoury matter had finally been effectively dealt with.
