Farmers in several parts of the country are grateful for the widespread rain they have received in recent days.

Agri Mpumalanga general manager Hennie Laas said the province had had dry patches during February, so the rains benefited famers who planted crops late.

“Grazing is coming along fine and the prospects for haymaking are looking good,” said Laas.

According to Laas, some 120mm to 200mm of rain fell in parts of the province over the past week.

Aggrey Mahanjana, secretary general for the African Farmers’ Association of South Africa said the rains may have caused disruptions in urban areas, especially in Gauteng, but “for farmers the rains were welcome and we’re expecting more good rains.”

The central northern provinces can expect more rain in the coming days and should beware of possible flooding, said the SA Weather Service.
