Go well, Victor!

It is with great sadness that Farmer’s Weekly bids farewell to Victor Mahlinza, who passed away on 4 December after a long illness.

Victor farmed on 115ha near Escourt in KwaZulu-Natal and was named the Grain SA small-scale farmer of the year for 2013.

He started farming in 2003 with 90ha of maize and 25ha of vegetables. On a recent media tour he attended he wore a colourful patchwork suit, and explained that each piece of cloth represented someone who had helped him along the way.

Jurie Mentz, the provincial co-ordinator for Grain SA’s mentorship programme in KZN, said that Victor’s passing was a great loss. “He was the first small-scale farmer in KZN to achieve a harvest of 250t on his own.

“Victor was a wonderful example to other farmers, he was always ready to help and we are deeply saddened by his passing.”

Victor’s son Sizwe will take over the farm and continue to be mentored by Grain SA.
