Government’s problems create opportunities for SA farmers

SA’s government is in trouble and can’t possibly deliver on all the economic promises it made to the electorate over the years, according to independent agricultural economist Dr Kobus Laubscher.

This inability creates ideal opportunities for SA’s farmers, he told the 2014 SA Stud Book general meeting in Bloemfontein recently. Government re-prioritised agriculture’s role as one of the sectors in the country that is keeping the economy going, Laubscher said. Government realises full well that agriculture is critical for employment and food security.

“Agriculture creates more jobs per rand invested than any other economic sector in SA,” Laubscher said.

The South African policy environment should therefore make provision for collaborative and enabling engagement with the agricultural sector, he said.
