According to earlier reports, Australia launched an anti-dumping investigation after allegations against the South African and Italian canned fruit industries. Apparently, complaints had been made against canned peach imports from SA that amounted to 65% of the alleged dumping problem in Australia.

Rian Geldenhuys, director at the Trade Law Chambers, said: “We are aware of this investigation but neither we nor our client can comment at this stage.” He was responding on behalf of the South African Fruit and Vegetable Canners’ Association (SAFVCA). Jacques du Preez, Hortgro product manager for SA pome and stone fruit, said the country currently had no market access for fresh pome, stone or grape exports to Australia. The DTI had not responded at the time of going to print.
