Striking foresters burn down plantations

A wage dispute between Komatiland Forests (KLF) and their employees has led to the decimation of over 600ha of trees after strikers allegedly set fire to plantations.

The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU), who represents the workers, is demanding a 15% wage increase, while KLF is offering 8%. Over 1500 workers are involved in the strike at all three of KLF’s plantations in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal and the company fears that more hectares could be burnt.
