The association’s general manager, Thinus Steenkamp, appealed to motorists to avoid the N3 between Warden and Harrismith because of a veld fire that is currently burning in the area.
“This is a serious fire. Visibility is extremely low and a number of accidents have already occurred because of the thick smoke. We urgently call on motorists to consider alternative routes,” said Steenkamp.
He also warned about a serious fire in the Arlington district and near Clarence.
A high fire danger has been declared for today and will remain in place until 12pm tonight because of the strong winds and plummeting temperatures.
Steenkamp asked land owners to remain vigilant and not leave their land and homesteads unattended.
