In addition to the usual international brands, this year’s Nedbank Eston Show saw a large representative sample of the wide range of equipment made in and around nearby Pietermaritzburg. There was Landmech Engineering, for example:

Disc harrows:
The company manufactures trailed and mounted disc harrows, with disc sizes ranging from 457mm to 914mm and widths to suit your available tractor power.

Fire tender: The Fire King 5000 has a 5 000l-tank and a Davey twin stage pump, driven either by a Honda petrol engine or an hydraulic motor powered by the tractor.

Grader: With a 2 800mm mouldboard and full hydraulic control of lift and tilt operations, the Roadking Rebel tractor-drawn grader is ideal for the construction and maintenance of fire-breaks, contours, mitre drains and roads.

An old established Pietermaritzburg firm, the Reapers Company makes a variety of specialised implements:

Triple applicator:
The bin of the Reapers Triple Applicator has three compartments and three separate metering devices that provide exactly the right mixture of the individual fertiliser components to meet the needs of a particular area. This allows for optimum fertiliser usage. Fertiliser can be placed directly on to four rows of cane or the spouts can be adjusted to put the material alongside the cane rows. Bin capacity is 18 bags.

Ripper applicator: The Ripper Applicator places lime or fertiliser deep in the slot created by the ripper tines. Crumble buster rollers help manage the trash, break up clods and close the slot, maximising fertiliser effectiveness. Bin capacity is 18 bags.

Rippers, ridgers and harrows
The Osman family has been involved in the manufacture of implements for more than 30 years and has been producing the Rhino brand since 2000.

Disc harrows:
Heavy-duty trailed disc harrows in the RTD range are available in various sizes with from 16 to 40 discs and working widths ranging from 1,7m to 4,6m. Total weight of the RTD 22 x 66 model pictured below is 1 960kg and its working depth is 200mm.

Rippers:
Rhino’s 3-shank, 5-shank and 7-shank medium-duty rippers can work to a depth of 450mm and require 10kW to 12kW/shank. The heavy-duty rippers are available with from three to 11 shanks and can work up to 650mm deep, requiring tractor power of 15kW to 17kW per shank. The 5-shank RRP5SHD heavy-duty ripper, for example, would require a tractor of about 85kW.

Ridger:
The shanks on the Rhino RRD3S 3-row ridger are 25mm Roq Tuff steel, while the wings are made from Bennox. Row spacing can be adjusted between 900mm and 1 000mm and ridging depth can go up to 450mm.

Ripper ridger: The RRD2S is described as a ‘no-till’ ridger when used in a one-pass operation, re-planting sugar cane. It can work up to 650mm deep.

On offer from Rogue Agriculture

Trailers:
Rogue’s trailers come in all shapes and sizes. One that was on display at Eston was a 6-ton bulk trailer suitable for silage harvesting with an automatic tail-gate and high flotation tyres.

Fire tender:
The RFF 3000 is a 3 000l steel tractor-drawn tanker with high flotation tyres, walk-around platform and Davey single stage pump powered by a Honda GX160 4-stroke petrol engine. It has a 4m suction hose with steel strainer for self-filling and a 60m hose and three inspection hatches for maintenance and easy filling.

Disc harrows: Rogue Agriculture makes a range of offset disc harrows. The model pictured has 20 x 610mm scalloped discs and 235mm spools, giving a working width of 2,25m.

Rippers:
Available in 3-tine and 5-tine models, Rogue rippers have 750mm x 25mm Roq Tuff shanks and hardened knock-on tips.
