In light of the flood of people crossing the Zimbabwe border illegally, Dries Joubert, chairperson of TAU SA North, has reiterated the organisation’s policy that no members should employ any illegal immigrant. H e implored members to follow the procedures put in place through long and hard negotiations between the Labour Committee of TAU SA North and the Department of Home Affairs. Joubert explained that any office of the department would be able to advise employers on the steps that must be taken should such an employer wish to obtain work permits for labourers. e said it was criminally irresponsible to employ illegal immigrants. “
They pose a real danger to the employer and the surrounding communities. If such an unregistered illegal immigrant commits a crime, he or she can easily disappear over the border without a trace,” he warned. “Let us all take responsibility for our own safety and the safety of our neighbours.” Joubert said any person who knew about the employment of unregistered illegal immigrants could contact TAU SA. “TAU will not protect those who harbour illegal immigrants,” he stated. Joubert said that the government should take responsibility for the massive influx of illegal immigrants, and added that a transit camp, where fingerprints and other identification are controlled, is now more necessary than ever to protect citizens against destruction of property and other violent crime. – Staff reporter
