The first information session about farming opportunities in the Republic of Congo will take place on 29 April.
According to Gert Rall, the facilitator of Agri SA’s initiative to help South African farmers interested in farming in the Congo, the session will provide opportunities for farmers to get answers from documents and CDs. It will be held at Lazar Opstal near Heidelberg in Gauteng and entry will cost R300. The next information session will be in the Western Cape.
The Congolese minister of agriculture and livestock Rigobert Maboundou will also visit South Africa later this month to sign an official agreement. Rall said the specific entity with whom the Congolese government will sign the agreement has not been ascertained, but it will either be Agri SA or an Agri SA affiliate.
Individual farmers will eventually each sign an agreement with the Congolese government to use land for free for 99 years. The first group of interested farmers will visit the Congo for five days at the end of May to look at available farms. Including flights, accommodation and transport the visit will cost about R25 000/person. According to Rall more than a 1 000 farmers have already expressed interest in the opportunities in the Congo. – Drieka Burger
